American Bashkir Curly Horses
- the rare hypo-allergenic horse
Vale farm is eagerly awaiting the arrival from America of two very rare Curly mares.
These horses are acclaimed to be the only breed of hypo-allergenic horse in the world.
Due to the unique genetic makeup of the hair and its "angora wool" type appearance, most people with allergies to horses do not react to them. Scientific research indicates that a certain protein is missing from the hair that causes allergies.
The coats are very easy to keep with manes sometimes being trimmed rather than brushed to prevent matting and to keep the curl.
The coats of the curlies can be expressed in 3 different ways but all show the best examples in winter. "Minimal" - is only expressed by curly hair on ears and fetlocks and kinky manes and tails, "Maximally" - the horse has curl all over body, ringlet mane and tail and curly eyelashes and guard hairs. lastly there is "Extreme" - these are very tight extreme curls which shed out for the summer - sometimes the horse also completely sheds its mane and tail.
Because the gene for curlies can be carried heterozygously some purebred curly mares can have no curl at all - these are known as smooth coat curlies - the curl gene is in turn passed onto their foals. Even the smooth coat curlies do not have the typical "horse coat", their coat is known as Bunny fur. Very well bred smooth coated curlies are used in purebred American Bashkir Curly breeding programs in order to try to reduce the amount of "Extreme" curlies being produced.
Along with being hypo-allergenic, the ABC is know for being calm, intelligent and VERY people friendly. They have tough constitutions, hard hooves and great stamina. The curly also has excellent movement making it a fabulous all round sports or family horse.
There a thought to only be around 4000 purebred curly horses worldwide. We look forward to promoting this very special breed and helping to keep it pure.

Mecate (Meca) is another eagerly awaited addition to our small group of rare breed curlies. His fabulous breeder has once again bred for conformation, type and temperament. He has a long pedigree on both sides which include incredible old bloodlines. Mecate has the kept the traditional look of the the first pure American Bashkir Curlies. He has a superb, calm, willing and friendly disposition alongside excellent conformation and superb movement. He also has the added bonus of colour.
