Spanish Mustangs & Criollos

Spanish Mustangs

Spanish Mustangs are a very rare breed of horse that date back to the first Spanish horses brought to the Americas from Spain by Columbus back in the 16th Century - it is a breed not to be confused with the Feral BLM Mustang that still roam parts of the USA today - there is a vast difference in ancestry and general appearance.
The Spanish Mustang spread throughout the Americas via settlers trading and theft from rampaging Indians! The Indians themselves in turn traded these wonderful, versatile, hardy little horses with other tribes - admiring their worth as fabulous Warrior's ponies. Over the years both Native Indians and Calvary soldiers favored this incredible little horse as their preferred mount. Later on Cowboys also used the Spanish Mustang for tending to their herds and driving them over vast distances from pasture to pasture. Inevitably some escaped or were left to roam free and flourished in the inhospitable landscape. These bands formed the herds of pure Spanish Mustangs that still survive and are preserved today By the Spanish Mustang Registry. It is a breed of horse which truly helped to sculpt the USA and will be forever a part of its rich & colourful history.
The Spanish mustang has incredible endurance potential - a very famous Spanish Mustang, renowned for its strength and Stamina was Hidalgo who was ridden by the Great Endurance rider Frank Hopkins in the late 1800's.

Bonita is a stunning Grulla (grey roan) Sabino marked mare who was imported by her first owner to the UK in April 2010 from Washington State USA. Pure Spanish Mustangs are very Rare, especially in Europe. She is a very well bred little mare who is registered with the Spanish Mustang Registry (SMR). Like all Spanish Mustangs she is incredibly intelligent. Bonita has excellent ground manners, catches easily and has been started under saddle and is doing well. We hope to continue with her ridden education and in the future we also hope to breed from her. We feel very lucky to be able to give a home to this clever, special little horse.
Bonita is now confirmed in foal to Huslers Revolution for an exceptional 2012 foal.

Criollos

Like the Spanish Mustang, American Bashkir curlies and American Paint horses, the Criollo horse dates right back to the days of the first Spanish Explorers to the New World, and is a descendant of theses early horses.
The Criollo was used as a war horse by the Conquistadors and travelled down into South America. Many escaped or were abandoned after battle and coped well with life on the Argentinian Pampas. They became tough and resistant to disease.
The locals took to these strong versatile horses and allowed them to breed and run free on the vast plains before selecting them for work. The Gauchos used them to work their cattle. This is still their main role today.
The Criollo makes a super Endurance or trail riding horse. It is also favoured as a polo pony when crossed with TB or Arab as it can turn on a sixpence. The breed is fearless and independent and benefits from being a one man/woman horse. Once bonded they are very loyal and affectionate.
Like the paint horse the Criollo comes in a vast range of stunning colours ranging from solid colours to amazingly loud splashed overo.

Rosillo is a stunning Red Dun Overo Gelding imported from Argentina in 2005 age 5 yrs. Rosillo is superb example of the breed standing at nearly 15.3hh. He has a wonderful even temperament and stunning good looks.
When Rosillo came to us he had not been ridden for a while as he kept becoming intermittently lame. After a lot of detective work and treatments from various experts to get to the bottom of his problems we now find him much improved and once again able to happily enjoy light hacking.

This little Filly arrived with us unhandled and thin after not doing too well through her first winter.
We have been working very hard to get weight on her and to handle her daily in order to gain her trust.
She is a beautiful natured little filly who now loves human company. We think that she may have great show jumping career ahead of her after clearing with ease the paddock fencing on several occasions in order to take her self back to her comfy stable!! She has turned the corner with the help of lots of vitamins and supplements and is once again starting to blossom from Ugly Duckling into a beautiful Swan.
